Are you sitting reading this, coffee in one hand, phone in the other, thinking “I don’t do tech”?
And yet you’ve got a fantastic piece of tech right there in your mitts.
No, I don’t mean the phone. I’m talking about the coffee.
A huge amount of tech has gone into growing the coffee beans, roasting them, shipping them to you. There’s masses in your brew method, too, whether you’re a French press user, a stove-top espresso person or have one of those bean-to-cup jobbies.
Getting the milk to you, fresh and safe, has been no mean feat either. Think of the hours of innovation that’s gone into animal husbandry, milking parlours, and the humble milk carton.
And not forgetting the mug itself. Based on one of humanity’s oldest inventions: ceramic vessels have been around for thousands of years. We’ve gone from hand-produced little pottery cups to mass-produced cups of all sorts of materials and shapes. With different designs to keep your brew warm. Or not spill. Or even just to profess your current pre-caffeinated mood.
Whether you keep up to date with the latest gizmos & code or not, you’re a techie too.
As the great Allan Savory said in his recent Do Lecture:
“Unless you’re drinking water straight from the river in your cupped hands, everything is tech”.
